Cord Prolapse

When the membranes are ruptured, there is a risk that the umbilical cord will prolapse into the cervix and birth canal. This is an immediate emergency and will require delivery to prevent compression of the prolapsed cord. Frequent monitoring can help detect fetal distress.

In the event that you experience what what you think may be the umbilical cord entering the birth canal, get into the Knee-chest position immediately and call 911.
